After a bit of retooling, Accentuate the Positives is back! Check your negativity at the door and let’s look at all the good things going on right now in the wrestling world (listed in no particular order).
Here’s your 10 positives for the week of March 1 through March 7:
1) Lesnar lays out Goldberg
WWE has created an interesting mystique around these two. After their first match went 86 seconds, you’d think the rematch would be a lame duck, but because the booking was so unexpected, I’m as intrigued as ever to see what happens with these two and who walks out of WrestleMania 33 as champion.
2) Undertaker sets his sights on WrestleMania
One the best things about WrestleMania season is finding out what path The Deadman will be taking en route to the showcase of the immortals. This past Monday we got an excellent segment to close Raw which gave us our first peek at what The Undertaker will be doing at WrestleMania. There’s still some questions to be answered, especially involving Braun Strowman, but it’s very cool to see Undertaker’s Mania plans start to map out.
3) The Women of SmackDown Live
While a classic one-on-one encounter might provide a better opportunity for a Mania Moment for the two involved, creating a multi-woman match for WrestleMania does give the women of the blue brand a spot on the big stage. That’s cool with me, as the women on SmackDown have been consistently entertaining and they’ve all worked hard to make the division meaningful. That’s an especially awesome feat when you consider that the division was started without a champion. I’m glad these women will get a share of the spotlight in Orlando.
4) AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon
This is a match that you would make on a WWE video game. The fact that AJ is considered a top guy to the point that they are comfortable putting him with Shane at WrestleMania is saying a lot. I’m as intrigued by this match up as any other at Mania. Now, of course the match isn’t official yet, but I’d be shocked if plans change now after what happened on Talking Smack. I’m looking forward to the build just as much as the match with this one.
5) ROH 15th Anniversary PPV
The Broken Hardy’s are the new ROH World Tag Team Champs (as well as TNA’s tag champs) and they’ll be defending their newly won gold against the Young Bucks and Roppangi Vice in a triple threat street fight at the 15th Anniversary PPV this Friday night. In addition, Bully Ray makes his debut alongside the Briscoe’s as they take on War Machine and Davey Boy Smith Jr. Bully Ray was such an excellent character during his prime TNA run, so I’m excited by what his ROH run will look like. The show is capped off with Christopher Daniels challenging Adam Cole for the ROH World Title. Plus, Kevin Kelly will be back on the mic calling the show. This show has the potential of being the start of an exciting time for Ring of Honor.
6) Grado to CHIKARA
— CHIKARA (@CHIKARApro) March 7, 2017
CHIKARA announced that Grado will compete at their WrestleMania weekend show Turn Left. This seems like a perfect match for both parties involved. Grado will take on UltraMantis Black.
7) Austin Aries debuts for 205 Live
The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived is back in the ring after a broken orbital bone sidelined him for quite awhile. I’m excited to see him showcased among the Cruiserweight Division and I’m hopeful we’ll see Aries vs Neville at WrestleMania for the Cruiserweight Title.
8) Impact Wrestling to debut a “new era”
Despite what some might say, there are definite positives in TNA right now. I’m hopeful that this “new era” that will debut on television this Thursday on PopTV will be the start of amazing new opportunities for some hard working men and women who might not have had a platform to showcase that hard work. Rooting for TNA/Impact to succeed is rooting for the wrestling business to succeed. The more successful companies there are, the better it is for the wrestlers.
9) Jericho JDRF
Chris Jericho designed a custom shirt, with proceeds going to benefit the JDRF which supports research for finding a cure for Type I diabetes. Check out the shirt and help out a good cause RIGHT HERE!
10) Rick Rude
It’s about time the Ravishing One entered into the Hall of Fame. I’m so psyched about this. He is definitely a childhood favorite.
