Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega have had some bad blood for quite some time.
While their rivalry began in the early stages of AEW, it’s only gotten worse since. Omega, with help from Don Callis, stole the AEW World Championship from Moxley on the December 2, 2020, episode of Dynamite.
Since then, Omega has refused to give Moxley a rematch, until now. Tensions between the two will finally come to a head on March 7 at Revolution. Except it isn’t just a regular title match, but rather an exploding barbed wire deathmatch. We don’t know what exactly that entails, but it certainly caught the interest of fans.
But before these two beat each other to a pulp, let’s look at how we got here.
It all started back on May 25, 2019, at AEW’s inaugural pay-per-view, Double or Nothing. Omega just lost to Chris Jericho in the main event. After the match ended, Moxley made his AEW debut by attacking both men.

After laying out Jericho and the referee, Moxley turned his attention to Omega. The two brawled through the crowd and up to the stage. Mox hit Omega with a Paradigm Shift on the prop poker chips, then threw him off onto the stage below.
The following month at Fyter Fest, Omega got his revenge. He attacked Moxley during his match against Joey Janela. The two again brawled up to the main stage, but this time Omega got the upper hand. To add insult to injury, he hit Moxley with his own Paradigm Shift to finish things off.
Both men were set to face off that August at All Out, but Moxley was unable to compete. A week before the event, he suffered an MRSA infection in his elbow that required surgery. Omega was not happy, cutting a scathing promo on him after the news broke.
Moxley went on to miss several months before returning on the premiere episode of Dynamite. There he interrupted Omega and The Young Bucks’ match against Jericho, Santana, and Ortiz. The two brawled throughout the arena as the main event match still went on. Things ended abruptly after Moxley put Omega through a glass table in the backstage area.
An unsanctioned Lights Out match between the two was announced for the following month at Full Gear. The bout was one of the most brutal in AEW’s short history. Both men used a variety of weapons, including chains, glass, and a bed of barbed wire. Once the dust settled, Moxley walked—or rather limped—away victorious.

For the next year, both went on to do other things. Moxley entered a feud with Jericho and the Inner Circle. Things culminated at Revolution on February 29, 2020, where Moxley beat Jericho to win the AEW World Championship. He successfully defended the title against numerous competitors, including Mr Brodie Lee, Darby Allin, MJF, and Eddie Kingston.
Omega began a tag team with ‘Hangman’ Adam Page and focused on the AEW Tag Team Championships. On January 22, 2020, at Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea Part Deux, the duo won the titles from SCU (Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian). They held the titles for 228 days until losing them to FTR at All Out in September.
Then, after losing the tag titles, Omega turned his attention back to Moxley and the AEW World Championship. He won the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament to become the number one contender for the title.
During the tournament, Omega started to act cockier and more pompous. More and more he began to return to his Cleaner persona. He finally got his shot at Moxley during the Winter is Coming TV special. Thanks to Don Callis’ help, he beat Moxley for the AEW World Championship.

Clearly unhappy with the result, Moxley continued to torment the champion. They have faced off numerous times over the last month, all ending in brawls. The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows) and Kenta have gotten involved as well. Last week, Omega finally had enough and the two are set to clash for the championship at Revolution.
Given their past encounters, a rematch between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega won’t be for the faint of heart. The fact that it’s an exploding barbed wire deathmatch just ups the ante even more. Regardless of how it ends, I have a feeling it won’t be the end of this feud.
Buckle up and hold on tight, because come Revolution we are sure in for quite a ride.
