Join us as we review the rise of the Demon King: Finn Balor in his meteoric rise through the ranks of NXT.
Although Finn Balor seems to be under some form of curse on the main roster, his NXT days were altogether more successful and Finn Balor: Iconic Matches brings together three of his NXT matches on the latest WWE Home Video release.
As that might suggest, this is a cheap and cheerful compilation, filling in at around 80 minutes. Other than a menu screen with NO background music and a short video profile of Balor that is your lot.
Luckily, and as you might expect, the three matches are all excellent affairs.
Things open up with a match against Neville from the NXT Takeover: Rival event from February 2015. This was the finals of a tournament to set up the number one contender to the NXT Title. And it is wonderful. Which, again, should come as no surprise to any viewer with any knowledge of either man. Back and forth action all the way, they even manage to overcome the face vs face issue to keep the fans on the edge of their seats throughout.
Next up is NXT Takeover: Unstoppable and an, erm, number one contenders match for the NXT Championship with Tyler Breeze. Whilst not quite at the level of the previous encounter it is still a very good bout. Again it’s competitive and equal, with Breeze’s frustration leading to some heel tactics in an attempt to vanquish the demon. It’s only around 11 minutes long, but that does mean that it never sags and is fought at a fast pace.
The set ends with the NXT Title match from the Beast In The East Network special as our man Balor takes on Kevin Owens for the championship. With Balor’s extensive history in Japan it was akin to a homecoming and the action didn’t disappoint. It’s a wonderful mix of moves, counter moves, close falls, false finishers and kick outs and ultimately is a match well worth revisiting.
Whilst this set won’t keep you occupied all weekend, it is a fantastic collection of three of Finn Balor’s NXT matches, all at a bargain price.
8 out of 10.
