In 2009 Total Nonstop Action announced that they were having a tournament to crown the very first Knockouts tag team champions.
The tournament consisted of teams such as Traci Brooks and Sharmell, Alissa Flash and Daffney, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky (collectively known as the Beautiful people) and the team of Taylor Wilde and Sarita. Lately the rumours have been circulating about the possible return of the tag team titles to Impact, and it would appear as though many of the fans would be happy to see them return. Although they weren’t the first major promotion to introduce tag team titles to their women’s division they certainly had one of the most memorable divisions.
So let me take you through the history of the TNA Knockouts Tag Team championships.

At No Surrender 09 the finals of the finals of the Eight team tournament to crown the inaugural Knockouts tag team champions when the team of Taylor Wilde and Sarita defeated The Beautiful People (Rayne and Sky) in the opening match of the event. Their reign would last 106 days which is the joint sixth longest reign, tied with the team of Tara and Miss Brooke Tessmacher. Wilde and Sarita would only go on to have one reign as team but both would once again become champions with separate partners. Sarita would pick up her second reign with Rosita who is now more memorable as her current character Zelina Vega in the WWE. Rosita and Sarita won the titles as part of the Mexican America on March 13 2011 at the Victory Road pay per view and became the sixth ever team to become champions by defeating Angelina Love and Winter.

Love and Winter became fifth team to ever hold the tag titles by defeating Madison Rayne and Tara in the finals of a four team tournament to crown new Champions after the belts became vacant. Velvet Sky was the original partner of Love in the beginning of the tournament but was taken out in a pre match attack by Sarita which lead to Winter stepping in at the last moment and winning her first and only reign as Knockouts tag team champion. To the surprise of many the team of Love and Sky never held the Knockouts tag titles together but arguably the titles were made for the Beautiful people and they are former champions after the combination of Sky and Rayne defeated the teams of Rosita and Sarita and Love and Tara.
The Beautiful People are the only former champions to defend the titles using the freebird rule with Lacey Von Erich also recognised as a former tag team champion along with Sky and Rayne. Rayne also being a two time tag team champion also with two separate partners, her second reign coming as part of her team with Gail Kim who was Knockouts Champion at the same time of being the fourth longest reigning tag team champion in history with Madison Rayne who is one half of the fourth and second longest reigning tag champions in history. Gail and Maddison’s run as tag team champions came to a halt after 126 days.

They would lose their championships to the team of ODB and Eric Young on March 8 2012, yes the current Impact world champion is also a former knockouts tag team champion and not only became champions but they are the longest reigning champions in the companies history with a reign of 469 days. Which is also the longest championship reign of any champion and championship in IMPACT Wrestling history. It was also arguably when intergender in Impact first started. But on June 20 2013 Executive of the Knockouts division Brooke Hogan announced that the tag team titles are officially vacated due to Young being a male talent. Seven days later the Knockouts tag team championships were deactivated and had their profile removed from the official Impact website.

That was a brief history of the TNA Knockouts Tag Team championships, titles that were held by some of the best Knockouts in IMPACT history. From Awesome Kong, Gail Kim, Angelina Love, Tara and Velvet Sky. If the rumours are to be believed and the return of the tag team titles to Impact are imminent then it could arguably be a great starting point for some of the current Knockouts who maybe haven’t been given many opportunities like Kiera Hogan and Neveah.
Recently with the news of one half of the very first tag team champions Sarah Stock (Sarita) being released by the WWE and Taylor Wilde returning to pro wrestling and her interest in returning to Impact it has many fans fantasy booking the return of the tag team titles and the return of the first champions.
