OH MY GOD! The Voice Of ECW, Joey Styles released from WWE.
Today’s news sees Joey Styles released from WWE after 11 years with the company.
His last tweet came on July 29th, which coincidentally was just days after he participated in a Facebook Q&A on the WWE’s official Facebook page, where he was pretty critical of some of WWE’s decisions, which, has been described as Joey’s “soft-shoot” interview.
Styles, 45, held nothing back during the chat as he spoke about his dislike at the “Universal Championship” title name, the 3-man commentary booth and why Vince McMahon loves Roman Reigns.
The video has since been pulled from WWE’s YouTube and Facebook pages, however there has been no confirmation that this is the reason that Styles has been released. from an 11 year partnership which saw Styles serve the last eight years as Vice President of Digital Media Content, which will be a big blow for the company.
His 11 year tenure saw Styles as an announcer on WWE TV from 2005-2008 before serving the last eight years as Vice President of Digital Media Content. Styles was responsible for all of WWE’s social media accounts, and given the countless awards the company has won, this will be seen as a big blow for the company.
In addition to his duties on WWE.com, during the 2012 baseball season, Styles hosted a weekly webcast called “Pinstripe Plays of the Week” on YES Network, where he would give a recap of the best weekly plays from the New York Yankees.
He was also the famous voice of Extreme Championship Wrestling throughout its entire run from 1993-2001.
We will bring you more on this story as it unfolds.
EDITOR OPINION: This is obviously a big blow for WWE. However, most companies will not take lightly to using their social media platforms to criticise the very company that employs you, regardless if you run that account or not.
Styles single-handedly transformed WWE’s Social Media division into one of the world’s leading brands, changing the way a lot of the promotional material is released. When Facebook announced Live Video on Pages, WWE became one of the first to use the feature to its full advantage, streaming exclusive interviews, backstage segments and, more recently, the WWE Cruiserweight Classic bracketology.
WWE recently announced the RAW, SmackDown and PPV Pre-Shows would also be broadcast live on their social media departments.
