Sexy Kurt – Smackdown, March 24th 2005
Early 2000’s Kurt Angle is the best Kurt Angle, fight me if you disagree and I do believe he could populate this list a lot more. This segment was used in the build-up to the dream match at Wrestlemania 21 against Shawn Michaels, Kurt brought in Sensation Sherri to bring a parody of Michaels theme song, Sexy Boy.
Sherri appeared on the original track alongside Shawn, one of Shawn’s former allies, people who Kurt was attacking to get to the Heartbreak Kid. Angle, came to the ring wearing chaps, a Shawn Michaels t shirt and would emulate Michaels entrance, followed by Sherri.
Inside the ring, he strutted around the ring singing his own lyrics to Michaels theme song whilst getting Sherri to chime in with her parts and was just being generally comedic. Michaels would appear on the titantron asking the fans to watch a retrospective of his career, the same thing Angle did on the prior Monday Night RAW. Inside the ring, Sherri is welling up at the video package of Shawn’s incredible career, Angle would notice and be visibly upset at her.
Sherri would kiss Angle on the cheek before the Olympian would throw her to the ground and lock in the Ankle Lock, only releasing when various referees forced him off. Only Angle can turn a comedy segment into something serious and make him look ruthless heading into Wrestlemania 21.
The Rock Concert – RAW, March 24th 2003
It was the build-up to possibly one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches, prior to Wrestlemania XIX. The Rock gifted all of the WWE fans to a Rock Concert before facing Stone Cold. I say treat, he spent most of the time bashing the fans in attendance by singing derogatory songs about the host town of that RAW, Sacramento. The way The Rock acted, dressed and the way he was presented was in such a Hollywood way, showing he was on his way out of the company.
Midway through his performance, a black truck would appear on the screen. It was following an ambulance and hinting that The Texas Rattlesnake had returned to the arena. We learned it was The Hurricane driving the truck as it entered ringside, so Rocky sent the security to deal with him, leaving The People’s Champion alone in the ring. Austin appeared from the back of the truck, chasing off Rocky out of the ring but leaving his prized guitar with Austin. He would proceed to break it as The Rock would look on.
This was just another brilliant segment between these two icons before their last meeting in WWE.
Satoru Sayama as Tiger Mask singing ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’
I was told about this one by one of my fellow podcasters and I am so happy I was introduced to it. This is the first incarnation of Tiger Mask, portrayed by Satoru Sayama, singing the Elvis classic on Japanese TV. Not much is really known about this clip, the TV show which it aired is not known or the actual timing of the broadcast but it would’ve been 1981 and 1983 when Sayama portrayed the character.
He’d appear in full wrestling gear and sing the Elvis song, Can’t Help Falling in Love with quite a beautiful voice. Please go check out the clip because it will put a huge smile on your face.
A lot of the time, the music segments are brought to us as a comedy foil and usually they do make us laugh. You get some serious ones that develop storylines and pointless ones, that do absolutely nothing. Nonetheless, we love them because we all love professional wrestling.
