Now that we have traipsed through times gone by and reminisced on the gimmicks and promos of yesteryear, let us talk about how now, more than ever, a good – no, great – promo is required.

We live in a world where there is so much competition in both the Wrestling and Drag worlds that you absolutely need the best at promos and storytelling to keep people coming back to your show.

One of the absolute best in the business for promos has to be Eddie Kingston. His character, his ability to connect, and his power with words have not only won him accolades such as “Best on Interviews” and “Smack Talker of the Year”, but have drawn fans to him for over 18 years.

His most recent place of residence is at AEW and it was thanks to his knowledge of how to cut a fantastic promo that got him there. Using social media, Eddie called out Cody Rhodes letting everyone know he not only wanted a shot at the title but needed it due to his financial situation. Giving the whole promo a completely personal feel.

He got the match with Cody Rhodes and he turned up in a mismatch of gear and no wrestling boots. It made the story even more poignant, knowing that this match meant Eddie Kingston could survive.

Due to this perfect character development and acting, Eddie Kingston was able to get people to care, enough that people who had no clue who he was were talking about him and having fans from all around the world beg for AEW to give him a contract.

If you are not aware of Eddie Kingston, have only just found him or even if you are a fan, I would thoroughly recommend going back and watching his work through the years because it is a great archive of some of the absolute best character and promo work I think we will ever see.
