While many were waiting for a certain man in a big red suit to bring them gifts of joy, last night another suited man brought fans something they’d wanted all year long.
Last night on Raw, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon (who was dressed as Santa Claus because of could he would be) gave out a number of ‘gifts’, one being the addition of women’s tag title next year.
There had been hints that WWE were planning on adding the set of titles in the not too distant future. Sasha Banks and Bayley mentioned them openly several weeks ago during an open forum held by Alexa Bliss. WWE has also been reportedly planting signs in the crowd requesting the titles.
These are not the first set of WWE Women’s tag team titles, the first being introduced in 1983, with Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria becoming the inaugural champions. The belts were also held by The Glamour Girls (Lelani Kai & Judy Martin) and the Jumping Bomb Angels (Noriyo Tateno & Itzuki Yamazaki), who feuded over the titles. The belts were dropped by the WWE in 1989. TNA also had Knockouts Tag Team Titles between the years of 2009 and 2013
The female superstars of the WWE and NXT gave their reactions to the news:
