When we look at the WWE roster it is possible to detect couples in real life like Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, Montez Ford and Bianca Belair, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae, Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux or Bron Breakker and Cora Jade or even Edge and Beth Phoenix or The Miz and Maryse. Along with family ties between Tamina, Nia Jax and elements of The Bloodline and women in mostly male stables like Rhea Ripley in Judgment Day or Mia Yim in Original Club. We also find wrestlers with some prominence who spend a lot of time in the drawer, without having plans for them, like AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Asuka or Shayna Baszler… So could an Intergender or Mixed Tag Team Championship work?

At a time when women are increasingly important in WWE, it makes sense to promote some kind of crossover between the men’s division and the women’s division instead of gender apartheid, which makes me think about the relevance of an eventual WWE Mixed Tag Team Championship.

In addition to being able to take better advantage of the existence of couples in real life, family ties, and coexistence in stables, the creation of a Mixed Tag Team Division would allow occupying male and female fighters for whom there are no big solo plans, even with some unlikely duos. Can you imagine Piper Niven or Nia Jax forming a tag team with a man smaller than them? Or is Tamina forming a tag team with Solo Sikoa and taking two more belts for The Bloodline? Or a badass like Shayna Baszler alongside R-Truth’s more comedic profile? And how about Carmella next to Carmelo Hayes? It would also be an interesting stage for the reunion between Bray Wyatt and Alex Bliss.

If we consider that each Monday Night Raw is three hours long and that at this moment the two main men’s singles and tag team titles are unified, this division would help fill a vacant space. I can imagine holding a tournament to determine the first double-champion. Can you imagine a final between Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch and Edge & Beth Phoenix? Or between Bray Wyatt & Alexa Bliss and Montez Ford & Bianca Belair?

The idea is not exactly original. WWE launched two seasons of Mixed Match Challenge in 2018, with The Miz and Asuka winning the first and R-Truth and Carmella the second. However, not only did these tournaments take place outside of the traditional weekly shows, they also put together very random pairings in the overwhelming majority of cases. Jimmy Uso & Naomi and Rusev & Lana, couples in real life, were perhaps the only mixed tag teams in which there was some connection between their elements.

In other latitudes, the Mexican promoter AAA has since 2003 – albeit with some interruptions in between – its AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship, which last year came to be held by the real-life couple Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo, both belonging to the AEW frames.
